How the estimator works

Most US and UK taxi meters use the same three components: a flag-drop (a fixed fee when you start the trip), a per-distance rate, and a per-minute waiting-time rate. The TaxiGenius estimator multiplies the distance and time you enter by the published meter rates for each city, adds the flag-drop and any default surcharge, and returns a fare estimate together with a likely range that accounts for the parts of the meter we cannot predict (random waiting time, exact route, tolls).

What is not included

Tolls on bridges, tunnels or expressways. These vary by route and are passed through to the passenger.

Airport pickup fees. Many airports add a small surcharge to the meter total.
Time-of-day tariff differentials. UK Hackney tariffs vary by time of day; the estimator uses an average.
Surge pricing. Licensed taxis do not surge, but holiday and snow emergency surcharges may apply in a few cities.
